Robert's first leap in visual effects was in 1999 when he was hired to film the background plates for the first ever high definition TV series: The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne. The 22 episode series took two years to complete. A massive undertaking in Visual effects and CGI animation that resulted in the creation of Icestorm Studios in Montréal. Since the series was all shot in studio on green screen and limited sets, Robert had the worse job off-set: travel the world with one of the production's four HDCam cameras (the first HDCam models to come-out in 1998) to film whatever was necessary to fill-in all that green!

Back in the studios, he selected, edited and quick-comped the BG plates (flip, flopping, and reversing) on Avid and then pushed the material to the Inferno and Flame artists, who did the real job (Ok we also had a DS at that time). Robert was also filming practicals, miniatures, fire effects and green screen elements in the Icestorms studios to help the CGI and compositing departments. It became a bit of a joke that if an animator appeared not to be too busy, Robert would dress him up in period clothing, stand him on a green screen cyclo, and put a fan next to him. All is fair to add a bit of life in a matte painting.

"Working hand-in hand with the animators and the compositors was the best training school for me as a VFX Director of photography and supervisor," says Robert Bock, "I was able to see right away (filming in HD) the results and was able to hone-down my skills. I was especially able to learn first hand the most important aspect of on-set VFX supervision: what can we get away with not doing, considering set and filming limitations, and what can cost-effectively really be fixed in post!"

Robert Bock's list of VFX projects as Director of VFX photography and VFX Supervisor ranges from high-end CGI Dramas to Discovery Channel's Dinosaurs Series and includes BG plates photography and practical elements shoots for Hollywood features such as Journey 3D and the new Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (with RodeoFX).
